PHOTOSHOP TUTORIAL 2 - FORM

Form and shape are areas or masses which define objects in space.  Form and shape cannot exist without space.  There are various ways to categorize form and shape.  Form and shape can be thought of as either two dimensional or three dimensional.  Two dimensional form has width and height.  It can also create the illusion of three dimensional objects.  Three dimensional shapes have depth, as well as width and height.

In the photo above, form is being displayed by the flowers being more in focus than the background.  The depth-of-field makes it look more three-dimensional, which makes it stand out.

When a strong depth-of-field is present, the photo has a nicer form.  When the subject is in focus, and the background is soft, you can easily tell that it is three-dimensional.

Form is present wherever there are objects in space.  Whether it be a building, dog, person, table, car, or bed, form exists everywhere.
